On June 30, 2025, Union Home & Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced the much-anticipated National Cooperative Policy for the two-decade period 2025–2045. The policy, part of India's commitment to "Sahkar se Samriddhi" (Prosperity through Cooperation), aims to rekindle the cooperative movement at the grassroots and strengthen its role in economic and social development
India marks its 100th year of independence in 2047, and this policy aims to build on the earlier 2002 framework by ushering in a new era of governance, transparency, and outreach. It is designed to fix systemic issues—such as outdated legislation, nepotism, and limited scope—that historically weakened cooperatives
